About Spelling

If you follow my blog or know me at all, you will soon realize that I spell certain words differently from what you are used to seeing on most web sites. This is because I am Canadian and I am a spelling NUT. It drives me crazy when things are misspelled. So naturally, it would rub me the wrong way to purposely leave out letters from words that I know need them. Canadian spelling is actually a blend of British and U.S.

More Fun Than A Card?

If you have extra time to spend on something special, I highly recommend trying one of these exploding card boxes. This is my first attempt at one but it won't be my last.

Exploding B-day Card Box

Design possibilities are endless for this "card". I decided to go with bright summer colours. Instructions for the box can be found on the Internet. The first one I found was a disaster as the given steps were incorrect and placed the back tab in the wrong position. Once I figured out the right configuration, I was off and running.

Closed, the finished size is 4-1/4" x 5-1/2". Normally, it would fit into an A2 envelope. This depends entirely on how thick the layers are.

I like lots of dimension with thick layers, so mine needed a larger envelope.

Exploding B-day card box, cupcake

I shopped for embellishments and once again, realized I could make cuter more appropriate things using items I already had in my stash at home.

Altogether there are 3 cupcakes sized at 1.5x1.75. There are so many different cupcakes to choose from. I used 2:  both from Straight From The Nest.

The "candy" hearts are cut from the same bright coral cardstock as the box then coated with 2 good coats of Glossy Accents and I let them dry well before using.

Cupcakes are from white CS with the tops cut from white vellum that already had white swirls. I emphasized the swirls by adding white Stickles and sprinkling clear glitter over top.

Cupcake wrappers are cut from shiny gold vellum. I scored lines from the wrong side to make the wrappers more real.

I cut several balloons from sparkly vinyl-like stock. This stuff is quite thick so the Cricut blade and pressure needed to be set on high.

Balloons are 1.25". Some have strings; some are stationary and some are floating. I love the effect of the movement as it gives life to the box as soon as it opens.

Balloons are from the Celebrations cartridge.

Candles were all cut from white CS, then each one was painted in coordinating colours.

Candles are from Straight From The Nest. I especially like the wicks on these. I left most of the flames open to be able to see through them. The candles were fun to do.

It's Your Day, sentiment

It's Your Day Sentiment

The front sentiment is cut from the same sparkly CS as the balloons, then shadowed in coral.

It's the perfect shape for the front flap.

Happy Birthday Banner

"Happy Birthday" is 2.24w x 1.15h. The background banner is from Elegant Edges and sized to fit the words.

I really like the finished header.

The Back

The box back provides a good space for the verse. I composed the poem and prepared it in Word, printing it on white CS.

To finish off the back, I added a couple of more balloons.

About Me

My photo
I guess you might call me a "right brainer", loving all things creative. Cardmaking is the perfect hobby for me as it allows me to be totally creative, combining design with poetry or verses I can compose myself. With Christmas being such an important occasion for cardmaking and crafting, I decided to create a separate blog just for Christmas projects. "It's All About Christmas" will host all my Christmas items. "Gracenotes For Today" will still feature items every other occasion of the year. I hope you'll drop by often and stay awhile!
